A slight deviation from my usual digital orientated postings, I wanted to bring to the fore this fantastic 12 minute slice of DFA life. Produced to coincide with the Red Bull Music Academy festival in New York this month, DFA Records was, and remains one of the touchstones of my life musically. (I urge everyone to get this album from 2004: A DFA primer, it’s basically their ten musical commandments…) Their bands, their commitment to great music, and their sheer joy has fueled what much of what makes music so interesting these days, yet they’ve done this through one of the most tumultuous times that recorded music has ever faced, let alone record companies. (Whose woes are well documented and plentiful.) This film shows that passion fuels great art. And the best communication, always comes from the best art. It’s a great coda to the outright quasi-religious experience that was ‘Shut Up And Play The Hits’

Last year I posted a mix by the epically talented Mark E. His slo-mo disco opus was a revelation and without doubt the best mix of what already is supremely consistent level of quality from the team at RA. With 2010 just three months old we might just have another contender. This time an uptempo Funk/Disco/Latin/House combination that soundtracks the nascent spring vibes and comes from a real up and coming producer. Thompson.

Red Bull Music Academy have released a fantastic and really interesting interview conducted with Musician/Records Collector/Designer/DJ/misc legend Trevor Jackson. Spread over an hour and 20 minutes, it’s a very personal journey through Jackson’s many achievements in design and music, full of insights and passionate defences of his musical philosophy, as well as some frank words on the music and design industry. Well worth a watch. Also, check this great video out as well from Trevor’s collaboration with the Lemon Jelly crew that took place at the iMax in 2007. (this is discussed about 40 minutes in)
