Sal Valentino

The late sixties were a strange time for many stars of the mid sixties rock boom. But their (relative) fall from grace more often than not provided music of a rare and beautiful delicacy. One of the lost classics in this genre within an genre is the solos ingle from Sal Valentino. The Van Dyke Parks produced Friends & Lovers’ from 1969. (more…)

J.D Souther

You might not know J.D Souther. Of all the the classic 1970′s singer songwriter crowd (dubbed the Canyon Crowd by Barney Hoskins in his stellar book; Hotel California: Singer-songwriters and Cocaine Cowboys in the LA Canyons) his is most pivotal story, but also the one that got away. (more…)

FLICKR – 1960′s L.A.

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

I recently found this fantastic set of images via Flickr of Los Angeles in the 1960′s. The images are that classic mix of 1960′s America, optimistic Mad Men esq stylings (the construction projects, the building of freeways etc…) And the countercultural underbelly that was stirring across the nation (and documented here via the denziens of Sunset Strip). Love it. Take a look here.

THE TRIP…

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

This year, i took a trip. Here are some of the basic facts.
Four Cities (NY,SF,LA,SHI), Seven Flights, Three Hotels, Two Cases, One Interview, 18,768 Miles  all in Two Weeks

Now amazingly i only lost the bags once, and that was Delta’s fault, but this truly was a trip of a lifetime, i saw some amazing things, fell in love all over again with New York and Los Angeles, was bored by SF, and completely bemused by Shanghai. I got fined for Jaywalking, shot magnums in a Shanghai whore house, went to the opening of the Dunhill store, got thrown out a cab in Brooklyn, saw the most debauched show in New York (cheers Soph) watched American Football in Candlestick Park, played golf ovderlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, went to my spiritual home of Laurel Canyon, saw the sunset over the Pacific Ocean at Santa Monica, the list goes on.. and decided that’s where my future was gonna be. 2008 was the prelude. 2009 will be the real deal. Here are some visual highlights…
