THE HURT LOCKER.
I managed to get my hands on an advance copy of a new film called The Hurt Locker. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break – need i say more?) this is absolute monster film…The film is a fictionalized account of the experiences of the U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) (bomb squad) teams in Baghdad. The pressures they experience and how that affects both their attitudes to their work, and their perceptions of live and death. It’s got some great cameo’s from Guy Pearce and Ralph Fiennes, but what really sets it apart from recent films I’ve seen is the unrelenting tension that permeates the whole film. You get too see close up the stresses of bomb disposal, the constant threat of IED’s and the tension is rarely broken by conventional techniques (e.g tense music = death!) while the cinematography is first class, a great ix of super slo-mo moments (think Matrix lite) and hand held close up camera work, where you can see every grain of dust while capturing the visceral nature of this line of work.
It’s a brave film not just for it’s subject matter (the documents of these guys exploits in Iraq have only just been de-classified) and is one of the first films to talk directly from a soldiers point of view, and doesn’t take an overt political view as a result (as opposed to say Lions For Lambs) I highly recommend going to see this at the cinema. It will have a limited release in the UK on the 19th June.Or you could me for it. twitter.com/thekingmob
