— THE SOCIETY OF THE SPECTACLE

THE AUTHENTICITY OF IRVING PENN.

Yesterday, on the whim of another co-blogger RDH i saw an exhibition collating some of the still life food photography of the legendary Irving Penn. It’s was great. What struck me about his work was it’s reality – the colours are muted, you can see the studio lights reflected in the subjects, the placement of the objects looks random at times but also tell a story. But it was the lack of re-touching that stood out most. It was almost a shock to see a PICTURE – a studio set up that was painstakingly out together to achieve the right moment. While I’m not against re-touching and hyper reality (sometimes it fits exactly the story you are trying to tell) It was very refreshing to see work so clean and unfussy and that had a sense of humour – Here’s a sample of some Penn’s still life
